Obituary for Joan Stinstrom

Joan Stinstrom of Prescott, entered into rest at the age of 89 on January 10, 2020 surrounded by her loving family. She was born August 3, 1930 in San Pedro, California; the daughter of Edward and Lucile Koerber.

Joan attended Mary Star of the Sea Catholic grammar school, St. Anthony’s Catholic High School in Long Beach, and Compton Community College. After school, she began working at the Pacific Telephone business office in San Pedro, then transferred to the Riverside, CA office, where she met her future husband, Richard. They wed on September 3, 1955 and were married until his death in 1989. Joan had a full life as a wife and mother as well as working at numerous volunteer efforts and as a professional calligrapher. It was after her husband’s death that Joan moved to Prescott from Northern California to start the next chapter in her life.

Joan took her earlier experience volunteering to many ends, volunteering at Prescott schools, The Phippen Museum, City of Prescott and Prescott Chamber of Commerce, Habitat for Humanity, Yavapai Regional Medical Center, Yavapai Symphony Association, American Red Cross, and the Adult Center of Prescott to name some recipients of her efforts. She retired from the last of her volunteer efforts in late 2019.

She enjoyed education and the arts in Prescott, attending Osher Lifelong Learning Institute classes and performances of the Prescott Pops and Yavapai Symphony as well as many other musical and theatrical productions.

Joan also enjoyed travel, visiting Europe, Asia, Africa, Mexico, and South America. Through her volunteering, travels, neighbors, and involvement with Prescott’s Sister City chapter working with the town of Caborca in Sonora Mexico, she forged numerous strong friendships in the community.

Joan is predeceased by her husband Richard, her parents, and brother Jim.

She is survived by her children Nina (Mike) and Gus (Cecelia). She will also be missed by many nieces, nephews, and friends.

The family is extremely grateful for the loving care provided by Maggie’s Hospice and Synergy Home Care.

A celebration of life party for Joan will be at 1 p.m. Saturday January 25, 2020 at the Adult Center of Prescott at 1280 Rosser Street in Prescott.
