Obituary for Richard John Davis

Richard “Dick” Davis was welcomed into everlasting life by his wife, Connie, on November 4, 2019. Dick was born on September 30, 1932 in Sioux City, Iowa, to Arthur and Florence Davis. He attended Morningside College for two years before being drafted into the Army. Dick was a veteran of the Korean War, where he was tasked with driving the Colonel.

At home, Dick and Connie moved across the Midwest—Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Missouri—to accommodate his successful career as a cattle buyer for Illini Beef and Armor. It was at the stockyards that Dick met Connie, and they were united in marriage on June 28, 1956. Dick was a God-loving and family-first man. His tough exterior could not hide his warm and affectionate heart. His love for his wife and family knew no bounds. Dick and Connie moved to Glendale, Arizona in 1999, after retiring from the family business in Ames, Iowa.

Dick was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Constance L. Davis, his granddaughter, Ashley Davis, and his parents. Dick and Connie are survived by their five children: Susan (Terry) Cross of Ames, IA; Steve (Julie) Davis of Norwalk, IA; Troy Davis of Glendale, AZ; Terry (Cindy) Davis of Peoria, AZ, and Kevin (Amy) Davis of Glendale, AZ.

The fifteen Davis grandchildren were the light of Dick’s life and his grandchildren will forever remember him for his sweet tooth (chocolate, ice cream and “Coke Classic”, especially), probing questions and sarcastic wit. Blessed to have Dick and Connie as grandparents are: Elissa (Robert) Hodges of Ankeny, IA; Christina (Skylar) Lempinen of Peoria, AZ; Ryan (Kayla) Davis of Boone, IA; Trisha (Steven) Thoma of Mason City, IA; Kara (Mark) Noble of Phoenix, AZ; Rachel (Adam) Arthur of Urbandale, IA, Kyle Davis of Peoria, AZ; Abby Davis of Schofield Barracks, HI; Ross Davis of Ames, IA; Taylor (Robert) Craig of Glendale, AZ; Regan Davis of Kansas City, MO; Krista Davis of Huntington Beach, CA; and Alexa Cross of Milwaukee, WI, Triston Davis of Norwalk, Iowa. Dick is also survived by six great-grandchildren: Colton, Cooper, Oliver, Axton, Alison and Tyson; his sister, Patricia (Ken) Carlson; and his brothers, William (Marge) Davis and James (Faye) Davis.

A funeral of Catholic mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 14, at Saint Thomas More Catholic Church, 6180 W. Utopia Road, Glendale, Arizona, followed by a gravesite service with military honors and internment with his beloved wife at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona. Memorials may be directed in care of the family to the Heritage Arrowhead Funeral Center, 7545 W. Rose Garden Lane, Glendale, AZ 85308.
