Obituary for Sue Ellen Vasquez

Sue Ellen Vasquez, (73) from Glendale, AZ passed away on November 1, 2019. She is preceded in death by her parents, Howard and Perdita Douty. She will be lovingly remembered by her two daughters, Toni Ridley and Amy Mahan and her husband Scott, her five grandchildren, Gunnar and Adelyn Ridley, and Zack, Kyle and Violet Mahan, and her four siblings, Carol (and Dean) Ebsen , Robert (and Meiko) Douty, and Linda (and Greg) McDonald, Kathy (and Ron) Schmoldt as well as each of their families.

Sue was born in Manchester, Iowa to Howard and Perdita (Sathre) Douty on October 18, 1946. With Howard being a traveling salesman, she had the opportunity to live in many small town locations in the midwest. All the way through to high school she was drawn to the arts as she was involved in band, choir, 4H, and sewing.

After Graduating from Clark High School in Clark, South Dakota in 1964, she went on to Humboldt Institute in Minneapolis, MN where she graduated with an International Travel and Secretarial Training Degree in 1965. Using that degree, she started her young adult life enjoying the sights and sounds of the big city, as she worked in clerical and human relations. Soon after she added the role of mother when she was blessed with two daughters respectively, on April 15, 1973 and November 27, 1978.

In 1979, with the attitude of “I can do this better” she would spend the next 20 plus years in the apartment managerial field. Between Minnesota and her eventual move with her girls to Arizona in 1986, she was awarded several certificates for raising the standards in this field.

When being an apartment manager didn’t challenge her enough, she found the accounting side of small offices her enjoyment. It was during this time that she turned her attention back to the arts and found enjoyment in sharing her beautiful cross stitch pieces with friends and family in their milestone celebrations. So it seemed like a great fit when she settled into a part time job learning a new craft of machine embroidery and monogramming. She took pride when telling about all the new things that she could do on the machines. In this new phase of semi retirement, she enjoyed the calmer life of taking Scooter to the dog park, monthly game nights of Bunco and Rummy Royal and going to the movies and theater with friends.

Her grandkids were her passion. She enjoyed many things with them as she was very active in their lives. From sports games, Girl Scout events, piano lessons, movie dates, baking lessons, and school functions she was always present at everything she could. One of the most important roles she loved about being a grandma was passing along family traditions. She loved to share her annual Lefsa making with family and friends, where she took great pride in showing everyone how to carefully roll the potato dough out and gently flip it on the griddle.

As a member of Peace Lutheran Church, she frequently involved herself in the Young Hearts Theater Group, a drama program, where she would assist with the final night production and costume making.

A visitation will be held on Friday, November 8, 2019 at 5:30 pm followed by a funeral service at 6:30 pm at Peace Lutheran Church, 18265 N 89th Ave, Peoria AZ 85382
